Introduction
A 1,035-kilometer railway runs from Kunming, China to Vientiane, the capital of Laos
(called Laos in China), allowing the 30-year-old Trans-Asian Railway (transnational line)
blueprint to finally take shape. As the "locomotive" of the central line of the Pan-Asian
Railway, the China-Laos Railway is regarded as an important hub connecting Southeast
Asia with China, Northeast Asia, Central Asia and even Europe.
The China-Laos Railway started construction in 2016 and was officially opened to traffic
on December 3, 2021. It is divided into a Laos section (422 kilometers) and a Chinese
section.
(613 km). In the future, the journey from Kunming to Vientiane will be completed in less
than 10 hours. This railway will shoulder the functions of passenger transportation and
freight transportation. Laos will also transform from a land-locked country on the Indochina
Peninsula to a land-linked country.
The full name of the China-Laos Railway is the "Zhongliao-Kunming-Wanzhou Railway",
with a total length of 1,035 kilometers. It is the first international railway that is mainly
invested and constructed by China, adopts Chinese standards throughout the line, uses
Chinese equipment, and is directly connected to the Chinese railway network. The line
starts from Kunming City, Yunnan Province, China in the north, passes through Yuxi,
Puer, and Mohan border ports in China, then passes through Boten border port in Laos,
and finally reaches Vientiane, the capital of Laos. It is expected to bring new trade to one
of the poorest countries in Southeast Asia. and tourist flows.
The China-Laos Railway has 45 stations along the entire line. After it is opened to traffic,
trains will run from Vientiane, the capital of Laos (called Vientiane in China) to the border
between China and Laos. The journey will be shortened from 2 days to 3 hours, and you
can arrive in Kunming within 10 hours, crossing the railway route.
There are 167 bridges and 75 tunnels along the complex geology and across numerous
water systems. Take the 507-kilometer-long "Yumo Section" as an example. It crosses
Mopan Mountain, Ailao Mountain, and Wuliang Mountain, and spans the Yuanjiang River,
the Amo River, the Balbian River, and the Lancang River. Among them, the Yuanjiang
Bridge also set a record for the world's highest railway pier.
After the train starts, the fastest time from Kunming to Xishuangbanna is 3 hours and 24
minutes.
The fastest time from Kunming to Puer is 2 hours and 46 minutes. This also marks that
Puer City in Yunnan and Xishuangbanna Prefecture will end the history of being
disconnected from railways and be connected to the entire China railway network.
